Rock Name: Amphibolite

Composition: A rock chiefly composed of minerals of the Amphibole group. The amphiboles are a complex group of silicate minerals that contain one or more of: calcium, potassium, sodium, lead, iron, lithium, magnesium, manganese, aluminum, chromium, titanium, and beryllium.

Nomenclature: Named after the Greek word "amphibolos" which means "ambiguous" because the minerals are easily mistaken for other minerals.

Industrial Uses: Crushed stone, building material.

Additional Notes: Amphibolite is a recrystallized metamorphic rock that consists mostly of amphibole and plagioclase feldspar, and little or no quartz.
