Gem, Rock, and Mineral Postage Stamps Featuring
Anatase

Mineral Name: Anatase

Composition: Titanium oxide

Nomenclature: Named after the Greek word "anatasis," meaning "elongation," a reference to the shape of the crystals.

Industrial Uses: Ore of titanium.

Additional Notes: Anatase is a polymorph with two other minerals, brookite and rutile. Polymorphs (a term that means "multiple forms") are minerals that have the same chemical composition--titanium oxide in the case of anatase, brookite, and rutile--but have different crystallographic structures. Anatase is also known as "octahedrite."
