Nomenclature: Named after the Latin word "cuprum," which means "copper."

Additional Notes: Cuprite exhibits two very striking crystal habits: cubes of a very dark red, almost black, color; and fine, red, hair-like tufts of crystals which are referred to by the variety name "chalcotrichite."
