Nomenclature: From the Arabic.
Industrial Uses: Ore of mercury, electrical switches, thermometers, thermostats. At one time, mercury was used to extract gold from gold ore.
Additional Notes: Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature. Due to its very high surface tension, mercury forms nearly spherical droplets. Mercury also has a very high specific gravity; it weighs more than 13 times an equal volume of water. Also referred to as "quicksilver.
